Nomar Garciaparra cracked 2 homeruns and scored 3 times as the Cook County
Maulers topped the Toledo Mudhens by a score of 8 to 6 at Bill Veeck
Field.
Garciaparra provided much of the offense. He doubled in the 5th inning,
smashed a solo-shot out of the park in the 6th inning and cracked a solo
homerun (his 4th of the season) in the 8th inning. Toledo made it exciting
in the 9th, but they were unable to push the needed runs across.
Chan Ho Park(1-0) allowed 5 runs in 7 innings, and picked up the victory. Park
got relief help from Mariano Rivera who gained credit for his 1st save. Bob
Wells(0-1) was the losing pitcher in relief. He allowed 5 runs and 6 hits in
1 and 2/3 innings.
'We didn't get the key hits when we needed them' Ray Martin said. 'We did what
we could, we just didn't pull out the win. What can you say?'
