Fleetwood (Hernandez
16-11, 5.60 ERA) at Stanley (Johnson 24-8, 2.93 ERA)
On paper, the game looked to belong to Stanley. Randy Johnson, dominant all season in winning the
NL Cy Young Award, was slated to be Stanleys Game One starter.
Meanwhile, Fleetwoods best starter Jeff DAmico was
unavailable. DAmico had just pitched a
complete game victory in the final game of the NL Wild Card Series. Instead, Fleetwood would send Livan Hernandez to
the mound. While Hernandez had found ways to
win during the regular season, his 5.60 ERA was far from intimidating. Even more troubling for Fleetwood was
Hernandezs poor showing in the NL Wild Card Series, in which he went only 1 1/3
innings in his only start.
But the Walkers were not intimidated. They got to Johnson immediately, scoring three
runs in the top of the first inning. Key
among the rally was Jeffrey Hammonds two-run double.
Things were looking promising for Fleetwood early.
From then on, however, Stanley, quickly showed why they won
103 regular season games. In the bottom of
the third, Moises Alou hit a solo homer and Terry Shumpert added a sacrifice fly. The game was now only 3-2 Fleetwood. And in the fifth inning Stanley would add four
more runs, keyed by a 2-run Jermaine Dye homer.
But Stanley did not stop there. The Sioux added another four runs in the eighth
inning, led by a solo Mark McGwire homer. Despite
a three-run rally by Fleetwood in the top of the ninth, the Stanley Sioux would take Game
One by the score of 11-7.
Stanley led the series 1-0. WP-Johnson (1-0), LP-Hernandez (0-1).
