BRASSBALL LEAGUE
POSTSEASON

GAME TWO

Fleetwood (Lieter 15-9, 4.75 ERA) at Stanley (Helling 21-6, 4.01 ERA)

Game Two appeared to be a much closer match-up.  Al Leiter, Fleetwood’s most consistent starter, would face Stanley’s Rick Helling.  Would we see a pitchers’ duel in Game Two?

In a word, no.

The Sioux wasted no time in hammering Al Leiter.  Neifi Perez led off the game with a solo homer.  Leiter then walked the next two batters before grooving a fastball to Moises Alou.  Alou promptly hit the pitch well out of the stadium for a 3-run homer.  And before the first inning was even over, Leiter would injure himself fielding a Bubba Trammell grounder and be forced to leave the game.  Ramiro Mendoza would take his place and give up another run in the bottom of the second.

It would have been easy for Fleetwood to give up already.  But the Walkers showed their determination in an amazing fourth inning rally.  First came two walks and three singles against Stanley starter Rick Helling, which led to three Fleetwood runs.  And then Paul Konerko capped the inning with a 3-run homer, giving Fleetwood six runs in the inning and the lead in the game, 6-5.  The game was on again.

But the momentum then swung back to Stanley.  First came a RBI double by Neifi Perez in the bottom of the fourth.  And then a bases-loaded walk to Mark McGwire in the sixth, quckly followed by an Antonio Osuna balk which plated another run later in the inning.  Stanley now led 8-6.

Once again, though, Fleetwood would battle back.  Craig Counsell, who had entered the game in the sixth inning due to a Damion Easley injury, cracked a solo homer in the eighth inning to make the score 8-7 Stanley.  And facing Stanley closer Antonio Alfonseca in the top of the ninth, Chipper Jones completed the comeback with a RBI double.  The game was now 8-8 entering the bottom of the ninth.

Pitching for Fleetwood was their best reliever, Derek Lowe, who had just pitched a scoreless eighth inning.  McGwire greeted Lowe with a lead-off single in the ninth.  But having extinguished most of its bench earlier in the game, Stanley had to leave McGwire in to run for himself.

Lowe retired Alou on a flyball next, but then put Dye on board with a walk.  The winning run was now on second.  Palmeiro came up next and ripped a single off Lowe.  Unfortunately for Stanley, though, McGwire was only able to advance to third base.   The bases were now loaded.

Catcher Keith Osik then came to the plate with only one out.  And with the infield and outfield in for Fleetwood, Osik came through with the game-winning single.   Final score: Stanley 9, Fleetwood 8.

Heading to Fleetwood, Stanley now led the series 2-0.  WP-Alfonseca (1-0).   LP-Lowe (1-1).

Neifi Perez slammed a homerun and had 2 RBI at The TeePee Tomb as the Stanley
Sioux won in their last at-bat beating the Fleetwood Walkers by the count of
9 to 8.

The deciding run was scored by Stanley in the 9th. Mark McGwire laced a
single. After an out was recorded, Jermaine Dye stepped in and he drew a
walk. Rafael Palmeiro then lined a single to load the bases. Keith Osik was
up next and he slapped a one-base hit resulting in an exciting win for
Stanley and a wild post-game celebration by the home town fans. Stanley had
13 hits for the game and Fleetwood had 9.

The victory was credited to Antonio Alfonseca(1-0) who went 1 and 1/3 innings,
allowing 1 run. Derek Lowe(1-1) absorbed the loss in relief.
