Stanley (Johnson 24-8,
2.93 ERA) at Fleetwood (Nomo 13-7, 4.85 ERA)
Stanley ace and workhorse Randy Johnson was once again ready. Fleetwood would counter with another strikeout
pitcher in Hideo Homo. A win for Stanley
would give them a commanding 3-1 series lead. A
win for Fleetwood would even the series at 2 games apiece.
Once again, Stanley came out with guns blazing. After a one-out single by Jermaine Dye, McGwire
crushed a hanging split-finger fastball from Nomo for a home run (McGwires third HR
of the series). The game was now quickly 2-0
in favor of Stanley. And then McGwire
connected for another homer off Nomo in the third inning, giving Stanley a 3-0 lead.
Fleetwood answered back.
Following a Chad Curtis walk, Jeffrey Hammonds took Johnson deep for a homer
of his own in the third inning. The 2-run
shot brought the Walkers to within one run.
But Stanleys prodigious power quickly proved too much
for Fleetwood to handle. Moises Alou,
inspired by McGwire, hit a solo home run in the fifth inning. It was his third of the series. Then Jermaine Dye hit a three run shot of
his own in the seventh inning, padding Stanleys lead to 7-2.
Randy Johnson had regrouped following the third inning homer
to Hammonds. Entering the ninth inning,
Johnson had allowed just two runs on four hits while striking out eleven. But after getting the first out of the inning,
Johnson allowed back-to-back doubles to Kevin Elster and Ben Molina. Johnsons day was done, giving way to the
bullpen. While Stanleys bullpen would
allow this inherited runner to score, it would end the game and give Stanley a 7-4
win.
Stanley now led the series 3-1. WP-Johnson (2-0). SV-Rodriguez (1). LP-Nomo (0-1).

Randy Johnson reeled off a total of 11 strikeouts and Mark McGwire smacked 2
homeruns and had 3 RBI as the Stanley Sioux beat the Fleetwood Walkers by a
score of 7 to 4.
McGwire provided much of the offense. He popped a two-run clout over the
fence in the 1st inning and lofted a solo-blast 'downtown' (his 4th of the
season) in the 3rd inning. Fleetwood had a chance in the 9th but they came
up short.
Johnson(2-0) went 8 and 1/3 innings allowing 4 runs for the victory. Felix
Rodriguez recorded the save, his 1st. Hideo Nomo(0-1) suffered the loss. He
pitched 4 innings allowing 4 hits and 4 walks.
Johnson was humble when questioned about his performance, 'Well, I felt pretty
confident in my pitches tonight. But, I had great support behind me and I
just threw what was called. That was an extremely well called game!'
