In a great finish the Metropolis Avengers came back in the top of the ninth and held on to win over the Cook County Maulers by a score of 3 to 1 at Bill Veeck Field. Metropolis came through with the game-winning runs in the 9th inning scoring 3 runs using 2 hits. Vladimir Guerrero led off and started the rally when he doubled. Bobby Abreu next to the plate and he was hit by a pitch. After an out was recorded, A balk was stepped in and he called. Eric Chavez came up and he hit a sacrifice fly resulting in a run. Melvin Mora stepped into the box and popped a two-run clout over the fence (his 2nd of the season). The teams had been locked in a scoreless duel until the 6th inning. Akinori Otsuka(1-0) was the winner allowing no runs in 2 and 2/3 innings. Jason Isringhausen recorded the save, his 1st. The losing pitcher was Billy Wagner(0-2) in relief. He allowed 2 hits and no walks in 1 inning. 'The only way this one could have been better', said Otsuka, 'was if we had played it at home.'
