The Lions Roar

The Lions finished up the month of July with a record of 16-12 against the AL East.  Plaza picked up 5 wins against Morris, 4 wins against Georgia and Hessville and 3 wins against Minnesota.  The Lions continue their push for a wildcard spot for the playoffs. 

Plaza’s first home series of July was against the Everreadys from Hessville.  The teams split the 4 games.  The Lions bats produced, batting .377, but the pitching staff had a sub par series, with a staff era of 5.75.  Louis Gonzalez went 8-13 for the series with 3 RBI’s and Jeff Kent went 9-17 with 4 RBI’s.  Bill Spiers and Tony Eusebio hit the only homers for the Lions in the series.  Paul Abbott and Gil Heredia had quality starts for the Lions but David Wells got hit hard giving up 6 runs and 13 hits in 5 2/3 innings. 

Georgia came to Plaza next for a 3 game series.  The bats were still on fire for the Lions as they swept the Braves scoring 30 runs in the 3 games.  Steve Finley went 7-13 while hitting 2 homeruns and had 7 RBI’s.  Jeff Kent, also, had 2 home runs with 6 RBI’s.  Ramon Martinez started 2 games for the Lions and went 6-9 with a homerun and 5 RBI’s.  Tom Glavine and Woody Williams picked up wins with solid pitching performances and Jeff Zimmerman pitched 3 shutout innings out of the pen to pick up a win.  Armando Benitez picked up 2 saves.  David Wells, again, struggled in his start. 

Plaza, then, won 3 of 4 games against the Minnesota Mudcats.  Woody Williams was the only starter to have a quality start but Tom Glavine and David Wells picked the wins in high scoring contests.  Eddie Guardado pitched 3 1/3 shutout innings and picked up a win.  The Lions batted .354 for the series led Rich Aurilia who went 8-14 for the series with a homer and with a team leading 7 RBI’s.  Rusty Greer went 6-11 for the series.  Jeff Kent led the team with 2 homeruns and he also had 6 RBI’s.   

The Lions finished off the home games for the month with a 3 game visit from Morris Monarchs.  The Monarchs held the Lions bats in check for the series and left town with 2 wins.  The Lions only managed to score 12 runs in the series.  Matt Williams went 5-11 with a homerun.  Steve Finley went 4-11 with 2 solo homers.  Tom Glavine had a great outing as he went 9 1/3 innings 1 run.  David Wells had a quality start and picked up the lone win.   

After the July games, Plaza went out and obtained a RH bat from the Gem City Wolfpack.  Wil Cordero was obtained for Midre Cummings and Adam Bernero.  The Lions are also looking for a quality RH reliever in preparation for the playoffs.
