The Lions’ Roar 

The Plaza Lions finished off the 2001 season by playing interdivisional rivals Cook County, Box City, and Iowa.  Plaza went 7-4 at home against their rivals.   

Plaza opened up the month of September by hosting Iowa.  The Lions erupted for 6 runs in the bottom of the 6th inning to break open a 4-2 lead and went on for a 10-2 victory.  Tom Glavine pitched 7 2/3 solid innings to pick up his 18th win.  Kenny Rogers was hit hard for the Rubes to sustain the loss.  Plaza was led by Jeff Kent who had 3 RBI’s, and by Wil Cordero who went 3-3 with 2 RBI’s.  In game 2 of the series the 2 teams battled back and forth.  Plaza ended up scoring 3 runs in the bottom of the 7th inning to go on to a 6-5 win.  Paul Abbott picked up his 15th win allowing all 5 runs in 7 innings.  Scott Sullivan absorbed the loss in relief.  Armando Benitez shutout the Rubes in the top of the 9th inning to record the save.  Jeff Kent hit the game winning pinch-hit triple in the bottom of the 7th to score Jeff Abbott.   Iowa won game 3 by a score of 6-4 behind an outstanding performance by starting pitcher Jamey Wright.  Wright went 7 shutout innings to record the win.  Woody Williams took the loss for the Lions.  Louis Gonzalez hit a 2 run shot for the Lions while Maglio Ordonez, Craig Paquette, and Christian Guzman smashes homeruns for the visiting Rubes.   Plaza came back to win game 4 behind a solid outing by Gil Heredia.  Gil pitched 8 solid inning allowing 2 runs and was relieved by Benitez in the 9th who picked up his 35th save.  John Vanderwal and Kent both slugged 2 run homers to help the Lions record the win.  John Snyder was hit with the loss for the Rubes. 

Cook County followed Iowa into Plaza for a 4 game series with the Lions.  Plaza won game 1 by a score of 9-5.  Louis Castillo went 2-3 with 4 RBI’s to help lead the Lions to their win.  Tony Eusebio and Mark Grace also had 2 hits for Plaza.  Chan Ho Park was tagged with the loss for the Maulers.  Cook County scored 3 runs in the top of the 9th and tacked another run on in the top of the 10th to pick up an 8-7 win over the Lions.  Armando Benitez suffered the loss as he allowed 4 runs in 1 IP.  Mike Piazza hit 2 homeruns with 3 RBI’s to pace the Maulers.  Troy Glaus and Ken Griffey each knocked 2 runs in.  Matt Williams had 3 RBI’s to lead the Lions.  In game 3, Plaza scored 7 runs in the bottom of the 7th inning and went on to a 10-6 win.  Eddie Guardado picked up the win in relief.  Kevin Brown absorbed the loss for Cook County.  Mark Grace went 2-4 with a homerun and 3 RBI’s to lead the Lions.  Louis Castillo went 2-4, scoring 3 runs, and he stole 2 bases.   The Maulers won game 4 by a score of 7-5.   Scott Williamson picked up the win for Cook County and Woody Williams gave up 4 homeruns for the Lions to get the loss.  Edgar Martinez went 2-5 with 3 RBI’s for the Maulers.   Steve Finley hit a 3 run homer for the Lions. 

The defending Brassball champions Box City Parcelmen came to Plaza to finish out the season.  In game 1, Plaza scored 4 runs in the top of the 1st inning and went on to a 12-6 win.   Glavine picked up the win for the Lions.    Finley banged out 2 homeruns and had 3 RBI’s for Plaza and Vanderwal and Mike Lieberthal each had homeruns and 3RBI’s as well.  Plaza scored a 10-8 win in game 2.  Wil Cordero went 5-5 with 3 RBI’s and Rich Aurilia went 3-5 with 3RBI’s.  Vanderwal and Rusty Greer had 4 hits for the Lions.  Mike Sweeny blasted 2 homeruns and Miguel Tejada hit a 2 run shot for the Parcelmen.  Woody Williams got the win for the Lions and Alex Fernandez picked up the loss.  Box City won game 3 by a score of 4-2 behind a solid outing from Pete Harnisch.  Raul Casanova had 2 RBI’s to help lead the Parcelmen to victory.
